HANDFASTINGS

The exact origins of a handfasting ceremony are believed to date back many thousands of years, usually coinciding with types of pagan worship, particularly amongst Celts that migrated to Britain from Europe around 7000 B.C.

A handfasting is a component of a wedding ceremony which entails gently wrapping cord, ribbon or tartan around the bride and groom’s clasped hands and tying a knot, the wrapping of the cords represent an infinity symbol symbolically binding the couple together in a declaration of unity. The cords or ribbons can be tied together just before, just after or during the couples vows.

You may have even heard the term “Tying the Knot”… Knots have been used in marriage ceremonies since at least the 13th century. The Legend of St Katherine circa 1225 used the middle english “cnotte” to represent the tie or bond of wedlock. Knots have a place in the folklore of many cultures and usually symbolise unbreakable pledges.

AVEBURY STONES

Avebury henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Avebury located in Wiltshire is part of an extraordinary set of Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial sites, and can boast one of the largest stone circles in Britain.Together with Stonehenge, Avebury and its surroundings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Avebury is an open site and free to enter. ROLLRIGHT STONES

The Rollright stones are located in a beautiful part of the country, near chipping Norton in the Cotswolds, on the Oxfordshire / Warwickshire border in England. There is no doubting that the Rollright Stone Circle, in common with many other ancient sites, is a place of mysterious beauty and subtle energies. It seems highly likely that Neolithic men and women “not only shared these experiences, but had an understanding of how to find such places”. This lovely intimate location is quite hard to find but once found its a magical place to hold a handfasting ceremony.

CASTLERIGG STONES

Castlerigg is perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles, with panoramic views and the mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop. It is also among the earliest British circles, raised in about 3000 BC during the Neolithic period.

SWINSIDE STONES
This rarely-visited stone circle is one of the finest in Britain. It has 55 stones, up to 3 metres (10 feet) high. Like Castlerigg, it dates from the Neolithic period and its entrance appears to line up with the midwinter sunset. Its other name, Sunkenkirk comes from a legend that people tried to build a church here, but the Devil kept pulling it down. The ceremony will be intimate, spiritual and entwined in love
